Gary Johnson, Pharm D, M.S. serves as Talyst’s senior pharmacist, working as chief liaison to pharmacy directors and as senior consultant for best practices. He also directs Talyst Consulting, a services organizations that counsels hospitals on the myriad design and process issues in preparation for the application of medication management technologies.
His initiatives to institute system-wide medication barcoding and centralized packaging at Parkview Health System in Fort Wayne, Ind., produced significant cost reductions and efficiency gains, while improving response time and other service measures.
As Corporate Director of Pharmacy Services at Parkview, a six-hospital system, Dr. Johnson instituted a single, unified formulary bridging multiple locations and restructured pharmacy operations, so that all facilities would benefit from the accuracy and inventory advantages of barcoded medications. The resulting centralized automation included barcode labeling, repackaging, carousel storage and retrieval and automated dispensing units, all to support barcoded medication charting and an electronic medication administration record.

He previously served at the University of Kansas Hospital, Kansas City, Kan., as Assistant Director of Pharmacy, Director of Clinical Laboratories and Director of Performance Improvement. Prior to that, at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, he completed an accredited residency in Pharmacy Administration from the American Society of Health System Pharmacists. He held previous resident and intern positions at Charleston Area Medical Centers, Charleston, W. Va., and Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.
Dr. Johnson received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Mercer University Southern School of Pharmacy in Atlanta.
